Obituary for John F. Miller (1840-1917)
No. 088 - Uncited clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection" of Beth Rengers Talken, 1998.

The subject of this sketch, John F. MILLER, son of Robert and Elizabeth MILLER, was born in Newtown, Va., Nov. 19, 1840. He came to Missouri at the age of 17 with his parents and settled at Portage De Sioux in St. Charles county, and after a short time came to Lincoln county near Snow Hill, where he spent the remainder of his life. He was married to Susan A. TAYLOR Sept. 25th, 1862, to this union were born 7 children, five girls and two boys, one son and two daughters preceded him to the land where the sun never sets. He was a father to Leslie TAYLOR from the time he was two months old. Archie, Mary Elizabeth, Emma Adaline and Annie survive and with their aged mother mourn for one of the best fathers and husbands that lived. He was converted and joined the Methodist church at Asbury nearly 58 years ago for many years he was an officer in the church, remaining a trustee until the day of his death.

His honesty and upright character made him a power for good for years!; he settled nearly all the differences that occurred in the community, they would always say "well, we will let Uncle John settle this" and seldom was there ever an appeal from his decision. A good man is gone from among us. He died Aug. 17, 1917. Twenty-three grand children and 10 great grandchildren are among the mourners. His funeral was preached by the writer, his pastor, to a large congregation and laid his body to rest by the side of the church he loved and served so long. We shall meet again. May the Lord comfort and bless the sorrowing ones.

--W.H. UTTER
