Obituary for Malcolm Middleton (date unknown)
No. 087 - Uncited clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection" of
Beth Rengers Talken, 1998.
Malcolm MIDDLETON, the 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. MIDDLETON, formerly of
Lincoln county, was drowned near Clarksville last Monday evening. The following
particulars of the sad event are taken from the Louisiana Times:
A cloud of gloom hangs over Clarksville this morning over the drowning of Malcolm
MIDDLETON, the 16-year- old son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. MIDDLETON of that city, at 7:30 last
evening.
Last night Malcolm and a number of young men rowed across the river to the sandbar
opposite Clarksville and went in swimming. The water in places was shallow, but between
the bar and the dyke was deep, with a strong current.
While paddling around in the shallow water he was drawn into the current and before he
knew it, was in the deepest water. He called for help, and his companions hastened to his
rescue, and all the time they were coaching him how to hold out until they reached him,
but to no avail, as he sank for the last time.
All night long the search for his body was kept up, and at 7:30 this morning the body was
found about 100 yards from where he sank.
Malcolm was a fine young man and a universal favorite with all, and the entire community
join in extending sympathies to the bereaved family.
