Obituary for W. L. Holmes (1877-1914)

[some of the side of the obituary is missing] . . . Dr. W. L. HOLMES was born at Hawk Point, Mo., February 20th, 1877, and died January 12, 1914, aged 36 years, 10 months and 22 days. He was the son of Chas. A. and Lydia A. HOLMES, his mother having died when he was about three years old. The training, development and education of the boy was carefully looked to by his father and family, passing rapidly through the public school and on through Buchanan College. He then graduated from the School of Osteopathy at Des Moines, Ia.

At about 14 years of age he united with the Troy Christian church and became an active member. Being called by his brethren to the Eldership, of his church, he yielded and this counsel was valuable in the meetings of the church board.

He was married to Miss Alma RICHARDS, August 2nd, 1899. Three children were born to this union; Little Lydia Ida, the first-born, died November 2, 1903, at the age of 2 years and 4 months. William and Mary Georgia are the joy and comfort of their mother.

Dr. HOLMES was one of our practical and useful men. His work as the principal of our public school will stand as one of the monuments to his usefulness. The large gathering of people at his funeral services was an evidence of the esteem ___ which he was held. The funeral was conducted by the undersigned ____ which the Odd Fellows took __arge and rendered a beautiful burial service at the grave in the Troy cemetery. The mound was covered with evergreen and beautiful flowers, symbolizing the precious memory of him whom we have loved and lost __while. --M.D. DUDLEY


Note regarding clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection":  Neva Murphy Hubbard (1886-1971) lived all of her life in Lincoln County, MO.  She collected a large file of clippings of Lincoln County residents. The majority of the clippings were without citation. Beth Rengers Talken, beneficiary of the collection, has transcribed them for inclusion in our Lincoln County Heritage Records.
