Obituary for Montgomery Geiger (d1894)

At his home, one-half mile north of Troy, Friday night, January 12, 1894, of heart failure following pneumonia, Montgomery GEIGER, aged about 69 years.
The deceased was born and raised in Lincoln county and was well known by our people. In 1849 he went to California, where he followed mining for a number of years, eventually returning to Troy. There are many worse men than was Uncle Gum. Though not identified with any religious organization, but rather a disbeliever in such forms, yet he was a man possessed of a sympathetic and charitable heart. He was true as steel to his friends, and would make any sacrifice for them, and no one ever went to him for a favor which was not readily and cheerfully granted were it in his power so to do. Some ten or twelve years ago a woman with several small children passed through Troy, their purpose being to reach friends in another state. The woman was in the most destitute circumstances, and her children by their wan faces and humble dress showed that but a small portion of this world's goods were permitted them. A collection was taken up for the woman that she might continue her journey, some giving ten, some 25 cents, and so on. When Uncle Gum was approached and he looked down upon the unforturnate woman and children, he handed her the last cent he had in the world, which was fifty cents.
The deceased leaves two brothers and two sisters, viz: Jacob GEIGER of Troy; John GEIGER of Texas; Mrs. Catharine ALLEN of Louisiana, Mo., and Mrs. Mary LOWTHER of Troy, with whom he lived at the time of his death.
Funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday afternoon, Eld. W.J. PATRICK officiating. A very large number of people from both town and country were present to pay their last sad respects. The remains were them conveyed to the Troy cemetery for burial, the following gentlemen acting as pall-bearers: P.G. SHELTON, J.M. McLELLAN, J.R.KABLER, Jno. D. CARTER, Henry HAVERKAMP and T.O. NUCKOLS.
Note regarding clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection": Neva Murphy Hubbard (1886-1971) lived all of her life in Lincoln County, MO. She collected a large file of clippings of Lincoln County residents. The majority of the clippings were without citation. Beth Rengers Talken, beneficiary of the collection, has transcribed them for inclusion in our Lincoln County Heritage Records.
