Obituary for Lulu Floy Ealum (1886-1922)

Lulu Floy EALUM nee NICHOLE, wife of Headley G. EALUM and daughter of John C. and Sallie NICHOLE, was born in Batchtown, Ill., Sept. 28, 1886, and died at her home in Higbee, Tuesday morning, Oct. 17, 1922, age 36 years, 29 days. Her death was the result of oxalic acid poisoning, administered by her own hand.
She grew to splendid womanhood in the community where she was born and her early education was received in her native _____. She then became a student ___ __artleff College in Alton, Ill. After spending one year there she attended the Gem City Business College at Quincy, Ill., from which she graduated. Upon completion of her business education she was a business clerk in St. Louis for nine years. She was married to Headley G. EALUM at Quincy, Ill., Nov. 30, 1912. To this union one child, Rosselle Hall was born. Her early married life was spent in Hannibal, but for a number of years preceding her death she had been a resident of Higbee. Mrs. EALUM had submitted to a serious operation in 1919 and another in 1920. These operations had caused a physical improvement, but shattered her nerves. At times she was seized with melancholy and despondent spells, during one of which she took her life.
Deceased united with the Washington and Compton Presbyterian Church St. Louis, in 1908, and had never transferred her membership. She was a regular attendant of the Methodist Church at Higbee and a faithful worker, being in Sunday school the last Sunday of her life. She was a good neighbor, loving mother, and faithful wife. Respected by all who knew her and loved by those who knew her best. She was also a member of Eastern Star Lodge at Higbee, and was chaplain of the order at the time of her death. She leaves to mourn her untimely going, her husband, H.G. EALUM and small son Rosselle, of Higbee, her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. NICHOLS, brother, W.H. NICHOLS and sister, Mrs. Ora VENABLE all of Pleasant Hill, Ill.
Funeral services were held at Higbee Wednesday morning at the Methodist Church. Brother ALLISON holding the service. Her body was then taken to Pleasant Hill, the home of her parents. Funeral services were again held at the Baptist Church in Pleasant Hill on Thursday, Oct. 19 and after a beautiful burial service by Brother Bartine the deceased was laid to rest in the Crescent Heights Cemetery, that silent city on the _______ --A. Note regarding clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection": Neva Murphy Hubbard (1886-1971) lived all of her life in Lincoln County, MO. She collected a large file of clippings of Lincoln County residents. The majority of the clippings were without citation. Beth Rengers Talken, beneficiary of the collection, has transcribed them for inclusion in our Lincoln County Heritage Records.
