Obituary for Mrs. Elizabeth (Shipp) Cooper (1826-1913)
No. 030 - Uncited clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection" of Beth Rengers Talken, 1998.

Mrs. Elizabeth COOPER died at the home of her son, Lee COOPER at Paynesville, Mo., Thursday, July 24, 1913, at the age of 87 years 2 months 7 days. Her death removes from our midst one of the old landmarks of Lincoln and Pike counties. While her life was of a quiet, homelike nature, her influence was widely extended. All of us who knew her were drawn to her by her gently, kind and affectionate ways. The rearing of the splendid family that she gave to the world, the frequent dropping into her life of sorrow, and sadness occasioned from sickness and death, only served to mellow and sweeten her life; she lived truly for her children. She contributed her share of service as a citizen to make the world better.

She was converted when 16 years of age and united with the Troy Christian church, thus becoming one of the charter members of that church. She was baptized by Eld. LANDRUM and lived a life loyal to her Savior and to her church.

Sister COOPER had a very decided convictions in her religious, social and even political life. The genuine sincerity of her convictions stamped itself upon her children and is shown in the high sense of honor exhibited in each of them. Her maiden name was SHIPP; she was born on the 17th day of May, 1826, in Woodford county, Kentucky.

This family moved to Missouri and settled in Lincoln county near Troy in 1832. She married James Rigdon COOPER, Sept 3rd 1845. Twelve children born to this union, five of whom preceded her to the grave; the living children are Mrs. Annie HAVENER, Mrs. Nettie HAMMONDS, Mrs. Sallie CANTER, Mrs. Alice KNOX, T.A. COOPER, A.D. COOPER, and Robt. E. Lee COOPER.

Mr. and Mrs. COOPER and family moved to Pike county in 1880 and settled near Paynesville. In this same year Mr. COOPER died. These children had a noble mother, the neighborhood had a splendid citizen, the church had a faithful member and Christ had an obedient child in this good woman. The funeral services were conducted by the undersigned at Paynesville in the home where she died and the interment was in the Clarksville cemetery.  -M.D. DUDLEY

Note regarding clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection":  Neva Murphy Hubbard (1886-1971) lived all of her life in Lincoln County, MO.  She collected a large file of clippings of Lincoln County residents. The majority of the clippings were without citation. Beth Rengers Talken, beneficiary of the collection, has transcribed them for inclusion in our Lincoln County Heritage Records.
