Obituary for Mr. A. Brown (dates unknown)
No. 014 - Partially cited clipping from the Elsberry Democrat in the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection" of Beth Rengers Talken, 1998.

Citizens of Elsberry who had known him for more than twenty years were shocked Tuesday morning when a message was received announcing that A. BROWN had died at his home in St. Louis late Monday night. Although many knew that his life hung by a slender cord and that death was only a matter of a short time, yet the news that the end had come was received with profound regret.

Mr. BROWN seemed to enjoy excellent health until a few months ago a cancer appeared on his face. He sought relief by consulting with and submitting to operations by specialists, but the malady grew worse until about 10:30 Monday night when he expired.

Mr. BROWN was a native of Marion county, having been born near Palmyra in 1848. At the age of thirty years he was married to Miss Martha MAYS. Five sons -- Rufus, John, Anderson, Woods and Priest, and one daughter, Margaret, were born to them. All the children and the widow survive him.

He moved to Lincoln county in 1889 and settled on a farm about three miles west of Elsberry. He was one of the original stockholders of the Elsberry & New Hope Gravel Road Co. and was president of the corporation for more than fifteen years prior to his death. For thirty-five years he was a faithful member of the Primitive Baptist church having served as clerk of the Bryants Creek congregation for more than twenty years and held a similar position with the Cuivre Siloam association for eighteen years.

The body was taken to Palmyra Wednesday and after funeral services conducted by Eld. Geo. CONNELLY, of Waverly, Ill., was laid to rest in Palmyra cemetery.  --Elsberry Democrat

Note regarding clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection":  Neva Murphy Hubbard (1886-1971) lived all of her life in Lincoln County, MO.  She collected a large file of clippings of Lincoln County residents. The majority of the clippings were without citation. Beth Rengers Talken, beneficiary of the collection, has transcribed them for inclusion in our Lincoln County Heritage Records.
