Thomas Samuel YATES (son of James Haddock
YATES and Mary Ann FREEMAN) was born 4 March 1859 in Wellsville, Montgomery Co., MO.
When he was about two years of age, his father left home to fight for the
Confederacy in the Civil War, and young Tom went to live with his grandparents, Samuel F.
and Elenor (WELLS) YATES. When the war was over, his father returned, but Tom
continued to live with his grandparents and was raised by them. His father said Mary
Ann had taken up with a Union officer in his absence, so he divorced her. No one
heard from her again, and nothing has since been learned of her fate.
Tom didn't marry until he was 37 years of age when he then married 19-year-old Susan Ariminta DIXON (daughter of John Henry DIXON and Missouri Jane STUART) on 21 Oct. 1896 in Winfield, Lincoln Co., MO. She was born 31 Jan. 1877 in Winfield, Lincoln Co., MO. He made his living as a carpenter in Lincoln County, and they were members for many years of the M.E. Winfield Church. He also was a member for many years of the Winfield I.O.O.F. Lodge. Thomas died of cancer on 4 Nov. 1948 in Winfield at age 89. Susan died on 13 June 1968 in Moscow Mills, at age 91. They are buried in Bethany Cemetery in Lincoln County.
They were parents of five daughters: Helen Missouri (YATES) Van SICKLE, Macey Ida (YATES) RODGERS, Martha Mae TURNBULL, Doris BROYLES/STEPHENS, and Cora (YATES) LAVY.
