The Spring Lot, Troy, Missouri

[Contributor's Notes:  The Woods Fort was there on Main & Boone Streets.Years later the people would gather to visit. ... those rocks were scattered around and "lost" But for the Troy 1819-1994 Dosquicentennial, the rocks marking in circle where the spring was, in that picture were all located and brought back to the Spring Lot where they belong. ... This pix was taken about 1900. It was taken probably from the yard of the Britton House on Boone Street facing east. Main Street. My mother told of some of our Cottles, Sherman or Stephen Cottle, not sure, was in the Britton House looking down to the Spring and seeing Black Hawk drinking from the Spring. He said he (Black Hawk ) was a beautiful creature. ]

The Britton House, Troy, Missouri

[Contributor's Notes:  I am sending the pix from the 175th Troy Book of the Britton house. It says below the pix. built by Sherman Cottle. So it would have been Sherman Cottle who saw Black Hawk at the Town Spring and not Stephen Cottle.  Someone was standing on the side walk on the east or west side on Main and pointing the camera to the house. The Street going by the house is Boone Street.

One of our Cottle Ancestors (I believe mom said Aunt Edie ( Edith ) nee Campbell Cottle was driving a buggy down Boone Street in Troy, when she saw some Union Soldiers and said, "Hurrah for Jefferson Davis". With that, the soldiers went over to the buggy and unhooked the horses loose from her buggy. I bet she got them back don't you ? ]
