Medoc located in the northwest corner of the county was founded in 1848
but was not platted until after the Civil War. Medoc was destroyed
during a Civil War skirmish on August 23, 1861 The new town of Medoc was
platted and the town began to grow. The new community had population
of 200 people, one saw mill, two dry good stores and one general store,
two hotels, one meat market, one grocery store, one copper shop and two
blacksmith and wagon shops.
In 1869 Medoc Lodge No. 335 A.F. and M. was organized and by this time
there were four churches and a school with a 5 month term and 71 pupils.
The occupations of the men in the town at this time was druggist,
grocers, gristmill company, four physicians, blacksmith, wagon maker,
boot and shoe shop owner, hotel owner, postmaster and justice of the
peace.
