Moore Cemetery, Grundy County, MO

This cemetery is in Franklin Township; S20-T63N-R24W. It is in a pasture across the road from the E. L. MILNER house. The farm was purchased from Sublet MOORE, whose family are buried in the tiny plot there. When the MILNERs rented the farm, the MOOREs requested that the memorial, in the form of a framed picture, be left permanently in the house.

The cemetery was recorded in 1964 by Mrs. B. F. Hoover and Mrs. Cleo Speck.

The memorial picture has a bird carrying in its beak a ribbon "Gone But Not Forgotten" above an hourglass surrounded by flowers and tassels. Below this are two placques; the upper one reads:

"In Loving Remembrance of Our Dear Children:
Phortus M. MOORE died Nov 14-1882; 18y-9m-12d
Elizabeth A. MOORE; Oct 22-1877; 22y-6m-2d
Mary J. MOORE; Jul 8-1873; 17y-2m-5d
James P.; Jun 6-1860; 2m-9d
Emma D.; Feb 28-1861; 27y
"

The lower placque has a depiction of a small open oil lamp over the top of each end, with a flame; it reads:

"Levie: July 1879; 99y-3m-3d"
"Rachel (HAINES): Sept 1863; 73 y"
"We loved them, yes, we loved them; but angels loved them more; and they have sweetly called them to yonder shining shore; the golden gates were opened. a gentle voice said ´come´, and with farewells unspoken, they calmly entered home"

The cemetery is named after John 'Jackie' MOORE, s/o Levi & Rachel. He is mentioned in the Grundy County History, p513. John was married 1st to Emmeline WASSON, and 2nd to Mary Jane FLOWERS. Sublet MOORE was the s/o John & Emmeline (WASSON). Many family members are buried in the Johnson Cemetery.

In the pasture across the road from the house are three remaining monuments out of seven reported by those who remember.
