Dr. Thompson Cemetery, Grundy County, MO
This cemetery is located in the Northeast 1/4 of Northeast 1/4, S3-T61N-R25W, in Madison Township. It is one of the first established cemeteries in the county. First recorded burial was in 1839. The cemetery contains nine identified burials, five definite burials marked by cut field stones, but not identified, and probably a dozen other burials with only rough stones on edge. Many of these are probably markers for slaves. The native stones are unmarked but shaped and some (10-15) are as large as six feet tall. There are probably as many as 40 native markers.
Dr. William Preston THOMPSON, one of the county's first white settlers and his brother-in-law, James Harvey MEEK, who came with him to the county, are buried here. Nearby is Leatherwood Hollow , the location of Indian Camping Grounds.
These cemetery records will no longer be updated effective December 2016.
