Robert Smith Espy Lewis, his Wives and his MotherObituaryR. S. E. Lewis was born in Franklin county, Pa., May 29th, 1836, died at his home in Liberty tp. on Wednesday, March 21st, 1894. He came to Daviess county in 1857, and has been a resident of this county ever since. He was married to Miss M. E. Fary in this county in 1856. His wife died in 1863. In 1864 he was married to Miss N. A. Covington, she dying in 1876. He was the father of six children, four boys and two girls. Within four week's time the two daughters and their father died leaving the four sons, who are just merging into manhood. "Bob" Lewis as he was familiarly known to us all, was possessed of as kind a heart as ever beat in human breast. The writer has counted him among his most valued friends. By nature genial and kind hearted his presence was always sufficient to dispel the clouds of sorrow and sadness which so often surround us. It is a sad task for us to record his demise. To his sons who are thus doubly bereaved we extend our heartfelt sympathy.
* * * * * * * * * * Mr. Lewis was married in Daviess county November 28, 1856 to Miss M. E. Fary. His wife died September 15, 1863. On March 15, 1864 he was united in marriage to Miss N. A. Covington. She died December 9, 1876. Mr. Lewis is the father of six children. He takes great interest in stock-raising, especially of horses (of which he has some fine specimens), averaging in sales, from fifteen to twenty per annum.
* * * * * * * * * * Mrs. K. Lewis, aged 76 years, mother of R. S. E. Lewis, died very suddenly at his residence on Tuesday, Dec. 29th. Rev. Broadhurst conducted the funeral services at Crab Orchard, the funeral being largely attended by the friends of the old lady and the family. She was the mother of six children, all of whom are living and mourn the loss of their best friend. Submitted by Tom Fitch. |
