Using this site, sponsored by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM),
you can find computer scans of orginal land patent records issued by
the Federal government, for both purchases and homesteads. The search
engine will tell you the name of the patentee, the state and county,
and the issue date. The link on the patentee's name will lead you
to the legal land description (number of acres, Township, Range and
Section) and images of the original document.
Geographic Names Information System
Use the US Geological Survey's GNIS (Geographic Names Information
Service) to search for that town, church, cemetery, school, or
other historical site you can't locate. To get a map, click on the
Feature Name. On the results page you have the option to display
a topographic map or arial photo from TerraServer. The Tiger Map
option puts a red dot on a map where the feature is located.
