JAMES HARTLEY, SR., was born about
1779 near Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia. He moved to Dickson
County, Tennessee, and about 1810 married ELIZABETH WALKER, daughter of Elijah and Elizabeth
(McGill) Walker.
Elizabeth was the matriarch of the Walker family, although the tribe today
generally refers to this family as the Hartley's. However, this is not
accurate as the Hartley's were originally a family of English origin who
inter-married with the local Indians. On November 22, 1830, they sold
their 30 and 17 acres farms in Dickson County for $125 and moved to Illinois
settling in Greenville, Bond County, where their last two children were
born. Elizabeth was born about 1790 in Tennessee and died in Bond
County October 23, 1834. James sold their farm in Greenville (filed, January
1837), and moved to Missouri with his children. In 1840, he owned 80
acres northeast of what is now Stockton near Owen's Mill in Polk County (now
Cedar County). When Cedar County was organized in 1845, the government
offered land to the early settlers of which he received 80 acres in Madison
Township in the Hartley/Masters district. He was on the very first
grand jury in Cedar County in 1845 and was a Masonic Lodge member. He
died October 16, 1855, aged 76 which is on his tombstone. NOTE: FAMILY KNOWLEDGE IS THAT THEIR 8 SONS WERE IN THE CIVIL WAR; ALSO, THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THEIR SON, HENRY K. HARTLEY, WRITTEN ABOUT 7 YEARS BEFORE HE DIED, STATES HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS THAT JOINED THE UNION ARMY AND HE AND THREE BROTHERS JOINED THE CONFEDERATE ARMY.
