BUSHWHACKER STORY: George Washington Woodard, called "Wash" was killed (hanged) by
"bushwhackers" during the Civil War.
According to the family story, a group of these men came to his farm and asked him,
"What side are you on?"
Apparently Wash gave the wrong answer (what was the correct reply?). He was then
hanged in front of his family.
The men then took everything the family owned including their cows. Wash was
then taken down, wrapped in a quilt and buried at Roller Cemetery,
however, his grave apparently went unmarked, because no stone has been
located.
NOTES: Wash is my great great grandfather. I remember, as a child, my mother
telling stories about him and his son, my great grandfather, "Dolly"
Woodard. Dolly's daughter, Minnie, who married Robert Williams, is my
grandmother. She and Robert are buried at Simsberry Cemetery.
