Text | Martha Louise Windes, 88, of Independence, formerly of Cassville, died March 30 at Hospice House in Kansas City. Mrs. Windes was born September 16, 1918, in Harrison, Arkansas, the daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Lucy Rachel (Holland) Johnson. She was a graduate of Bolivar High School and Southwest Teachers College in Springfield. She did graduate work at the University of Missouri. She was a Sunday school teacher, taught English in high schools, and was a librarian at the Wheaton and Cassville high schools until retiring in 1982. She was also librarian at the First Baptist Church in Cassville where she was a member of the senior adult group. She was a member of the Southwest Association of English Teachers and Missouri Association of English Teachers. She was a member of Southwest Association of School Librarians and Kappa Kappa Iota National Teachers Organization. She married Grailie Windes on March 8, 1942, and he preceded her in death July 20, 1961. Survivors include one son, of Independence; one daughter, of Independence; two grandchildren, one great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Sally, in 1944; two brothers, Floyd and William Johnson; and one sister, Jane Shahan. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. tomorrow, April 3, at Washburn Prairie Cemetery with memorial services to follow at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Cassville under the direction of Fohn Funeral home of Cassville. |
