Text | Mrs. Josiah [sic] West died at her home in Exeter Friday following a long illness. Mrs. West was widely known in Barry County and in the Exeter community and was much beloved by all who knew her. She was one of the older citizens of the county, being 80 years old at the time of her death. Before her marriage she was Louisa Virginia Inman, the daughter of Marve S. and Betty (Morgan) Inman and was born near Waynesville, MO in 1859. Mrs. West bore her long illness with patience. She came with her parents to Washburn, MO when she was seven years old, and moved to Exeter in 1885, and continued to reside there ever since. She was united in marriage to J. T. (Joe) West, April 8, 1877 at Washburn and they were the parents of five children, two who died in infancy. She is survived by her husband and the following children: Marve West of Tulsa, Okla.; Mrs. Jean Stephens of Exeter, and Harry Lee West of Guthrie, Okla. Eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive as well as many other relatives and friends. She confessed her faith in Christ at the age of thirty years under the preaching of the Rev. W. C. Willey. She was a faithful Christian worker and was treasurer of the Christian church of Exeter for nearly thirty years. At the funeral service it was said: "You could always find her at her post of duty, from doing janitor work to erecting a church building for the Lord's work. This building is standing today as a memorial to her and to her devoted service. It never got too cold or too hot for her to make sacrifices for her Christ. Her life has been lived among us, and it has preached her own funeral." Funeral services were held at the Christian church at Exeter, on Sunday afternoon, August 20, 1939 by the Rev. J. S. McQueen and the Rev. Chas Vanzandt. Burial in the Maplewood Cemetery at Exeter, under the direction of the Horine-Culver Funeral Service. Pallbearers were: J. C. Ellston, T. C. Goodwin, Ralph Roseberry, Calvin Fountain, A. D. Taylor and Oliver Ware. Flower bearers were: Mrs. Jack Doyle, Willa B. Hopkins, Allene Cox, Opal Dell and Mary Alice Bowman. A quartette from Cassville composed of Chas. Willis, Kenneth Goble, Raymond King and Truman Thompson furnished vocal selections, with Miss Angeline Williams at the piano. Note: Her husband's name was Joseph T. West. |
