| Text | Mrs. D. J. Waltrip one of the oldest citizens of Barry county died Tuesday evening Jan. 13, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. E. Johnson of Wheaton. Mrs. Waltrip was seriously ill for several weeks before her death which was principally due to old age. She had passed the 84th year of her life, a greater part of which had been spent in Barry county at the old Winthrop homestead northwest of Purdy. Mrs. Waltrip was the mother of eleven children, five of whom were able to be present at the funeral. Those attending the funeral from a distance were: her son J. M. Waltrip of Memphis, Tenn., her daughters, Mrs. Maggie Wilks of Springfield, Mo. and Mrs. J.C. Bowmen of Miller, Mo., and her grand daughter, Mrs. Maud Gillett of Monett. Funeral services were conducted at the home of M. E. Johnson Thursday by J. S. McQueen and again at the Waltrip burial grounds northwest of Purdy by Rev. Goodnight. Research Note: Delilah Jane (Haynes) Waltrip was the wife of Elijah Waltrip. They married in Barry County, 4 Mar 1851. |
