Obit For Samuel M. Trollinger

Text S. M. Trollinger, a prominent citizen of Cassville and present Circuit Clerk of this county, died at his home in Cassville Wednesday evening about 6 o’clock. Death was the result of acute indigestion from which he had suffered only two days.

He was active in the religious and civic affairs of Cassville and the county as a whole feels the loss of an esteemed citizen.

Goodspeed's 1888 History of Barry Co., MO - Samuel M. Trolinger, senior member of the firm of S. M. Trolinger and Co., general merchants of Cassville, MO, was born in Lawrence Co., MO, Aug. 31, 1856. He is a son of James N. and Jennie (Trott) Trolinger.

The father was of German descent, and was born in Bedford Co., TN in 1816. He grew to manhood in his native county, and was there married in 1837. In 1852 he immigrated to Lawrence Co., MO, locating at Mt. Vernon, where he worked at his trade, that of carpentering.

On Aug. 13, 1864, he enlisted in the Union Army, being assigned to Co. D, 46th Reg. of MO Infantry, and served until Mar. 6, 1865, when he was discharged at Springfield, MO.

His wife, who was of Irish descent, was born Nov. 16, 1819 in Orange Co., NC, and removed to Bedford Co., TN, when seven years of age. She is now residing at Verona, MO, and is the mother of seven sons, five of whom are living. They are Enoch H. (a lumber merchant at Aurora), William (a grocery merchant at Verona), Thomas (who is in business with William), George (a dry goods clerk in Verona) and Samuel M.

The last named was educated in the schools of Verona, and when eighteen years of age became an apprentice to photography under his brothers, William and Thomas, and served two years. He was afterward engaged in farming, as salesman in a dry goods store, and as bill clerk in a railway office at Seligman.

In 1885 he engaged in the grocery business at Verona on his own responsibility, continuing until Feb. 3, 1886, when he and T. J. Miller became partners in a general store in Verona, which they removed to Cassville on Jan. 17, 1888. They carry a first class stock of general merchandise and are doing a good business.

In politics Mr. Trolinger is a stanch Republican and in religion is a consistent member of the Christian Church.
