Text | Friday night at an early hour, at his home, north of Exeter, Phillip Jackson Stephens, one of the pioneers of Barry County, died after a lingering illness. The deceased was born in Monroe Co., TN, February 2, 1816. In the thirties he was married to Miss E. Miller, of Knoxville, TN, and moved to Polk Co., MO. He came to Barry County in the early fifties and since that time had been a resident of the county and one of our best known citizens. Mr. Stevens [Spelled both Stephens and Stevens in same article.] during the War of the Rebellion, served in the Confederate Army, William T. Burton being a Lieutenant. He was engaged in the Newtonia battle afterwards fought under Gen. Shelby at Oak Hill and later was in the fights at Booneville, Cape Girardeau, Batesville, Pea Ridge, and Helena, serving three years. The deceased is survived by five children, three sons and two daughters, Sheriff Stephens being a son. The funeral was held at Exeter, Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. A large number of Cassville citizens attended. |
