PHARIS JACKSON STEPHENS

Pharis Jackson Stephens, 66, life-long resident of Exeter community, died at his home there on Wednesday, Feb. 26, after a short illness from a cerebral hemmorhage suffered early Sunday morning. He was born 3½ miles north of Exeter on March 17, 1880 and was a son of the late J. A. and Mary Stephens.

Mr. Stephens was united in marriage to Jean West, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. T. and Lou West of Exeter on September 3, 1902. He engaged in the grocery business with Mr. West for a time and later became overseer for the Exeter Special Road District to serve some 20 years.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Jean West Stephens; five sons, Joe Stephens, Ponca City Okla.; Albert (Pete) Stephens, Oklahoma City; Jack and Marvin Stephens, California; Billie Stephens in the service at Ft. Sill, Okla., and four daughters, Mrs. Jessie Debross, Monett; Mrs. Lloyd Bradford, Canby, Calif.; Mrs. Fredaline Smith, Fresno, Calif.; and Mrs. Ruby Stoops, San Fernando, Calif.; two brothers, Clarence and Keet Stephens; and four sisters, Mrs. Lennie McCarroll, Kansas City; Mrs. Norma Black, Pittsburg, KS; Mrs. Clara Rice, San Diego, Calif.; and Mrs. Maude Derrick, Venice, Calif., and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Exeter Baptist Church Monday afternoon by the Rev. Charles VanZandt with burial in the Maplewood Cemetery at Exeter by the Culver Funeral Home.
