Text | John M. Stark passed away at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, April 10, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. O. Black, in this city, following a brief illness, at the age of 81 years and 3 months. Funeral services were held at the Black home in this city and at the Washburn Prairie church Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. T. Brattin. Interment was made in the Washburn Prairie Cemetery. John M. Stark was born at Russellville, Cole County, Mo., Jan. 10, 1837. There he continued to live until the spring of 1866 when he moved to this county and located at Keetsville, now Washburn, which had been his home since that time until a few years ago when Mrs. Stark passed away. Since that time he has lived among his children. He was married to Mrs. Martha E. Hampton, nee Daugherty, at Washburn and to them seven children were born, five of whom are living, Mrs. W. O. Black, Mrs. Thos. J. Foster of Washburn, Mrs. J. D. Gustin of Kansas City and Mrs. Gilbert Withers of Monett and W. E. Stark of Trenton, all of whom attended the funeral of their father. John M. Stark was a man of exemplary Christian character. He was of a reserved disposition but always cheerful and pleasant and made friends of everybody. Since 1859 he had been a member of the Christian Church and his life was one worthy of emulation. |
