Obit For Henry Jefferson Smith

Text Jefferson Smith, a pioneer resident of the north part of the county, passed away Saturday, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. T.V. Poole, in Monett, at the advanced age of 92 years. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at Bethel, Rev. Elbe Stibling, and interment made in the Bethel cemetery. For many years, Mr. Smith had been a member of the Methodist Protestant church at Mt. Pisgah.

He was a native of Tennessee having been born in the State January 18, 1838. When but a boy his parents came to Barry county and located on Kings Prairie. His wife Lavina (Fly) Smith passed away about 27 years ago.

The following children survive him: W.A. and Thurman Smith of Purdy; Otto Smith of McAlester, Okla.; Mrs. E. Boss, Mrs. J. M. Finn, Mrs. E. D. Davis, Mrs. T.V. Poole and Mrs. Herbert Walton of Monett; and Mrs. Joe Samples of Seneca.

Mr. Smith was the grandfather of Judge Emory E. Smith, Circuit Judge of this Judicial Circuit. He has a host of relatives and friends over the county.

Donna Cooper's Note: His father's name was sometimes written as Jiles and sometimes as Giles. His mother Sarah (Singleton) Smith is buried in Bethel Cemetery and his grandmother, Nancy (Jacobs) Smith died in 1880 and is also buried there - without a stone. She was the mother of Giles Smith.

The Smith family has the birth year for Henry Jefferson Smith as 1842, which could be in error. His sister, Sarah Frances Smith who married George Long, was my great-great grandmother.
