Headline ANOTHER PIONEER GONE ONE OF OLDEST MEN IN BARRY COUNTY

Text - Outline With the passing of Oscar L. Rose who for more than a half century had lived in Purdy, Barry county lost one of her oldest citizens. Mr. Rose died at the home of his son, Charles A. Rose, in Monett on the night of January 2, where he had been taken from his home in Purdy several days before.

Concerning Mr. Rose, Friday's Monett Times carried the following:

At the time of his death Mr. Rose was eight months past 94 years of age. His adult life spanned the period of history when the west was in the making. He was one of the many native Tennesseans who came into the Ozarks at make their home.

He was born at Charleston, Bradley county, Tennessee, May 2, 1841. He was married to Martha J. Stingnett March 22, 1860. His wife died at Purdy November 20, 1914.

In his youth Mr. Rose lived at Palmyra and Collinsville, Ill. And it was in nearby Springfield that he frequently saw Lincoln and his mind was rich with reminiscences of those days.

Back in the days when Granby was a new and thriving mining tow, colorful with the activities of those days, Mr. Rose cast his lot there, and eventually became postmaster. Then as the railroad pushed south from Monett through Arkansas, Mr. Rose chose Purdy as a place to make his home, moving to that town in 1881. He was in the mercantile business there for many years. He also had a dry goods store in Monett at one time. It was on the lot now occupied by the Fly hardware store.

Mr. Rose always took an active part in publican affairs, doing his part in church, school and lodge work, and holding many offices.

He was a member of the Methodist church, active and faithful up to the time of his passing. He had served as treasurer of the Purdy school board. At one time Mr. Rose was district grand warden of the A. O. U. W. for Newton and McDonald counties.

The survivors are the son, Chas A Rose of Monett, a grandson, Lieut. Chas A. Rose, Jr. of Fort Leavenworth, Kan., a granddaughter, Mrs. James T. Shore of Cheyenne, Wyo., and one great- grandson, Marion Shore of Cheyenne. He had no living brothers or sisters.
