Headline | JUDGE MAT ROBERTS PASSES AT GOLDEN MONDAY A.M. AGE 79 OLD TIME GOLDEN CITIZEN WAS WELL AND FAVORABLY KNOWN THRUOUT COUNTY; SERVED ON COUNTY COURT |
Text | Judge Mat Roberts well know Golden merchant, died at his home there Monday morning, following an extended illness. This splendid character had lived all his life in that section and was one of Barry county’s honorable and high standing citizens. Matthew Harbert Roberts was born May 29, 1854 on a farm near Golden, and was 79 years old. With the exception of a few years during the civil war, which were spent at his parent’s old home in Rushville, Ill., while his father serviced in the Union army, his entire life has been lived in the Golden country. Soon after the war he returned to this county. He engaged in the general mercantile business at Golden for many years and was well and favorably known throughout that section, as well as other parts of the county. On December 15, 1877, he was married to Miss Pauline Parker to which union was born six children, one boy and five girls. One daughter preceded him in death. Those surviving are Mrs. T. H. Weddington, Golden; Frank Roberts, Bristow, Okla.: Mrs. O. L.Horine, Golden; Mrs. J. H. Magers, Compton, Calif., and Mrs. Ray Sisco, Golden. He is also survived by his excellent wife, who with the children gave this good citizen every care possible to comfort him in his closing days. He also leaves 21 grand children and 14 great-grandchildren. Forty years ago he professed faith in Christ and united with the Christian church and always lived a consistent religious life. He always took an active part in all civic and public affairs and served one term as Judge of the County Court of the county from the Eastern district and made a splendid official. One ambition of this splendid character’s life, was to have a good highway from his community and a bridge across White River. He lived to see two bridges across that stream and he was very active in making them possible. At this time surveyors are at work on a route for a highway into the Golden country which was most gratifying to him, even though it came at a late hour in his life. Funeral services were conducted at the family home Wednesday afternoon by Rev. Jas. Brattin, Cassville, after which the remains were laid to rest in Viney cemetery, near his home, under direction of the Horine-Culver Funeral service of Cassville. Masonic rites were conducted at the grave by members of the Cassville lodge. A quartet composed of Owen Frost, Floyd Inman, Mrs. Clarence Stiles, and Jack Hisey, of this city, furnished music at the services. At the request of the family, Mrs. John Ray sang a solo. A large number of grieved relatives and friends attended the services and many beautiful floral emblems were received by the bereaved family as an expression of the high esteem in which he was held. It was the writer’s good fortune to have been intimately acquainted with this splendid character most all his life. He was a man who possessed many friends and was a kind and loving husband, father and friend. The Democrat joins the many friends of the bereaved family in extending heartfelt sympathy in their sad hour of bereavement.
