Text | Mrs. Kate Reese, wife of the late S. A. Reese, died Sunday evening, Nov. 10, of general debility, age 76 years, 9 months. She was the mother of F. N. and Al Reese of this city, D. G. Reese of near Washburn, Mrs. Kate Robbins, Lawrence Co., G. C. Reese of Miller, Peter Reese of Okla. and Sam Reese of Idaho. For 35 years Mrs. Reese had been a member of the M. E. Church South, and died in that faith, the remains were conveyed to Washburn Prairie, Monday afternoon and there laid to rest beside her husband, who had gone before. Mrs. Reese formerly resided at Washburn and Seligman. We are requested to return the sincere thanks of her sons, for favors extended during their mother's sickness and death. She was the daughter of William C. Cook and Catherine Comer Ditch. Her son David's death certificate names her as Kate Meade. Husband of Kate Reese was Stephen Albert Reese who was the son of S. A. and Mary Reese of Virginia. A family record compiled by Glynn (Reese) Thompson, granddaughter of Stephen Albert Reese, is as follows: Our Grandfather Reese and family came from Virginia in 1857 near Richmond to State of Kansas where he homesteaded. From there he went to Vernon County, MO, where he stayed during the Civil War. Grandfather did not fight in the Civil War (he hid out) and Grandmother and her five little children were burned out of their homes "three different homes" by Kansas Bushwhackers or guerillas, leaving her with one small wagon with shafts, one horse, one feather bed and a few quilts. After the Civil War he came to Washburn, Barry County, MO - settled in Old Washburn - where he followed the blacksmith trade. This was year of 1866. Benjamin Newton Reese, a brother of Grandfather Reese, made his home in his latter days with Grandfather, since he had never married. Died at home of Grandfather in or near Seligman, Barry County, MO. The body was brought to Washburn Prairie Cemetery for burial. His grave being just east of Grandfather and Grandmother Reese. They are as yet unmarked and unless the nieces and nephews put up markers they will always be so. They are just south of the Jno. Varner lots. |
