Text | Kathleen Reed, age 92, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2013, at her home.
She was born July 4, 1920, in rural Cassville, Missouri, the daughter of William A. and Maud (Brooks) Carney. On December 29, 1938, in Monett, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Clarence E. Reed, who preceded her in death on May 20, 2006. Also preceding her in death were her parents and one brother, Bill Carney. Surviving are two daughters of Springfield, Missouri and of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; one brother, Richard "Sarge" Carney and his wife, Bunny of Cassville, Missouri; one sister, Betty Carney of Cassville, Missouri; three grandchildren. Kathleen received her education at Sparks Elementary School and was a 1936 graduate of Cassville High School. At the age of sixteen, Kathleen entered Henrotin Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago. She attended University classes there for two years. In 1938, she met her husband, Clarence Reed and they were married that year. After their marriage they moved to Jefferson City, Missouri, where Clarence was a State Representative for two years. During the years of Clarence’s employment as an attorney, they lived in eleven states and travelled in most of the United States. In 1972, they returned to Cassville, living in Sherwood Forest and in 2006, after the death of Clarence, Kathleen moved to Springfield, Missouri to make her home. While in Cassville, Kathleen was a very active member of the First Christian Church, serving wherever needed. Kathleen was a "professional volunteer" and enjoyed her lifetime of service in the community, church and schools. She was awarded a Lifetime Membership in PTA for her many years of volunteering in the Kansas City Schools as room mother and assistant nurse. She was a Red Cross Volunteer, collected for American Heart Association for many years, delivered Meals on Wheels for twenty-seven years, was instrumental in initiating and funding the Senior Citizen Housing in Cassville and spent many years teaching Sunday School and organizing youth programs. She was a strong advocate for Habitat for Humanity and was active in politics her entire life. Kathleen was proud of being an Ambassador for four years at Creekside at Elfindale in Springfield. She was known for saying she was proud of being "an Irish Carney from the Ozarks". When Kathleen wasn’t volunteering she was reading, working crossword puzzles, cross-stitching or walking outdoors. She lived a healthy lifestyle. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 4, 2013, in Oak Hill Cemetery, Cassville, under direction of Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. Reverend Juli Nelson will conduct the services. |
