Orb McNabb Discovers Body After Running Over It Thought to Have Ben Hurt Before. |
Text | Claude Poe, 50 was found on the highway near the Hagood place, between Washburn and Seligman at 7:30 last Wednesday night Oct 4. He was rushed to the Barry County Hospital but died within an hour or so. Poe was discovered by Orb (Aubry) McNabb of near Ridgley after he had run over the body and stopped to see what caused it. McNabb was passing a truck at the time but the truck driver never knew of the circumstance. Poe’s body showed there had been a clean cut on the head and a broken nose in addition to prints on the car having run over him to burst his liver and lung and break all ribs. The cut on his head indicated he must have been injured before being run over and an investigation has been made by Sgt. Harvey George of the State Highway Patrol along with Sheriff George Roden. No information has been found to throw further light on the injuries. It was thought he may have been riding in a truck and fallen out. Poe had poor eyesight and it is possible this may have had something to do with the accident. Poe had lived around Washburn and Seligman for the last 49 years and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Harve Poe, who preceded him in death. He was married to Oma Pruitt of Washburn January 17, 1918. To this union were born seven children, one of whom died in infancy. Three grandchildren and three brothers and three sisters, James Poe, Cassville; William Poe, Jane; Early Poe Washburn; Mrs. J.W. Marshall, Gerald, Kan.; Mrs. D. J. Cline, Clovis Calif., and Mrs. S. L. Main, Jane, also survive. Funeral services were conducted at the O.K. Church Sunday by Rev. Charles VanZandt with burial in the Hickman Cemetery under the direction of the Koon Funeral Home.
