Obit For William Henderson Phillips
Headline HENDERSON PHILLIPS OF GOLDEN, MO., SHOT AND KILLED INSTANTLY LAST SATURDAY
Text Henderson Phillips was shot and killed by Caleb Brown at Golden, Missouri, last Saturday. A load of buckshot was emitted into Phillips’ head and body. After the shot was fired the horse ran about one hundred yards before the murdered man fell off, the horse was shot and will also die.

Phillips and his son were passing near Browns’ house where Brown and his wife were clearing ground. They were all provided with guns and only a few words were passed until Brown drew his gun and fired the deadly shot.

Phillip’s son, no doubt would have made things warm for him, but Brown’s wife leveled her gun on him and marched the young fellow on. Young Phillips went and procured the service of the sheriff, who immediately proceeded to arrest Brown and his wife.

The coroner’s jury rendered a verdict that Phillips came to his death by gunshot from the hands of Caleb Brown. Brown’s wife is held as aiding in the murder.

It is not known to us to what led to the difficulty, but Phillips is generally regarded an outlaw and it is thought by some that Brown was justifiable. Phillips had three living wives, among whom, are Sade Littrell. He is also a brother to the man who shot our townsman, L. E. Harbert, during the late war.

William Henderson Phillips' common law wife was Sarah Catherine Littrell.
Another common law wife/girl friend was Celia Ann Hundley who was the ex wife of his brother Harvey.
