Text | Juanita M. Pence, 82, Carthage, Mo., passed away Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at St. Luke’s Nursing Center, Carthage. Juanita M. Haddock was born Feb. 23, 1929, in Berryville, Ark., the daughter of Samuel S. Haddock and Gertrude (Addington) Haddock. She was a graduate of Monett High School, Monett, Mo., Class of 1947, the Monett Business College and the Springfield Beauty College, Springfield, Mo. She married F. Wendell Pence M.D., in Tulsa, Okla. He preceded her in death on Jan. 28, 2007. She owned and operated Salon-De-Elegance’ and later the Six Pence Antique Shop, both in Carthage. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage, and the McCune-Brooks Hospital Auxiliary. A family quote that best describes her versatility was "She was as comfortable behind a sewing machine as she was a table saw." Survivors include two daughters, Sheri (Darrel) Smith, Carthage, and Cathy (Barry) Pierce, Elk City, Okla.; one son, Joe Pence, Carthage; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters; and five brothers. Private graveside services will be held. Memorial gifts are suggested to Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage, in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 West Chestnut, Carthage. Research Note: She was married to William Frank Mayhew, Jr., and then Lee Sumner, before she married Dr. Wendell Pence. She was born in Durham, Washington Co., AR, not Berryville. She was proceded in death by three sisters - not two - and one of the daughters listed, Cathy is a step-daughter. The obit reads she was married in Tulsa, but she told me she was married in LaRussell, Jasper County, by my dad. |
