Text | Mrs. Jane McMahan, an old and beloved citizen of Exeter, passed away Monday at
the age of almost exactly 75 years. She was known by a large number of the
citizens of this entire community and news of her death will bring grief to
many hearts. Her pastor, Rev. L. F. Filewood, conducted funeral services at Exeter, Tuesday afternoon and interment was made in the beautiful Maple Grove Cemetery nearby. The following short sketch of her life was reported by her pastor: Mrs. Eliza Jane McMahan, was born in Kingston, Ark., April 25, 1841, and died near Exeter, Mo., at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Maud Northcutt, April 27, 1916. She was married to G. R. McMahan, Aug. 28, 1856. To this union 9 children were born. Four died in infancy. Mrs. H. M. Hargis of Springfield, Mo., Martin S. McMahan of Aurora, Mo., Mrs. Nora S. Lucky of Saragossa, Tex., Mrs. Kate Powell of Pierce City, Mo., and Mrs. Maud Northcutt of Exeter, Mo., are left to mourn her death. She was converted and joined the Baptist Church of Rocky Comfort some time in 1855. After the Civil War closed she joined the M. E. Church South of which she continued a faithful member to the close of her earthly pilgrimage. She was so afflicted and weak the last few years of her life that she could not take much interest in the active work of the church but ministered the best she could to its support. Her well worn Bible bears the marks of regular reading. May we all meet her in the place of "The Saint's ever lasing rest." |
