Obit For John J. McNatt

Text The sad news was received in this city Monday, by the relatives, Mrs. P. E. Horine, John and Grant Blankenship that their brother-in-law the Hon. John J. McNatt, died Sunday, June 6, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. C. Chenoweth in Joplin, Aged 73 years, 2 months and 1 day. He was a son of later Mr. and Mrs. John C. McNatt who settled at Aurora, in 1833, and where the deceased was born March 5, 1847.

He grew to manhood there, where he worked on the farm and taught school in the winter months.

During the civil war, he enlisted in the Union Army and served in Battery I, 2nd, Mo., Light Artillery.

In 1874, he rented the mill at Corsicana, of late L. J. Blankenship and conducted that business very successfully.

On June 20, 1867, he and Miss Catherine Blankenship were married and seven children were born to this marriage and they are: Mrs. L. C. Chenoweth of Joplin, Mrs. Martha G. Mayfield of McDonald County, Lillie J., John L., of Joplin, Oscar R., and Autn who died in infancy. He was a member of the G. A. R. and the Christian Church.

Many years ago, he represented McDonald county, in the state legislature, while residing at Indian Springs, where he was engaged in the flouring mill business.

Several years ago, he moved to Neosho, where he had lived many years. Mrs. McNatt died a few years ago.

He was a brother of Judge Carr and Hon. A. R. McNatt of Aurora. The remains were interred in Neosho Cemetery.

He was a good Christian man and citizen and enjoyed the confidence esteem of all who enjoyed his acquaintance.
