Headline COUNTY LOSES ANOTHER ONE OF ITS SPLENDID CITZENS
FARMER FOUND DEAD IN ROAD ON HIS PLACE
CHAS. MOONEY, 62 SUCCUMBS TO HEART TROUBLE; BODY FOUND BY SMALL BOYS
Text The lifeless body of Charles Mooney 62 years old, was found by two small boys Sunday morning, lying in a roadway on his farm, eight miles southeast of Monett. He had been gone since Friday. Mr. Mooney was alone on the farm when his death occurred, his wife being in Oklahoma. The body was found by Earl Lamp, 13 and his brother Glenn, 9, when they went to the farm about 11 o’clock Sunday morning.

The youngsters were badly frightened when they saw the body lying on its back in the roadway leading to the house. They ran home and reported the case to their parents. Mr. Lamp notified the neighbors and several of them went to the farm and found that the boys’ report was correct. Callaway’s’ undertakers were notified and the body was brought to the funeral home in Monett.

A coroner’s jury early Monday morning gave the verdict that Mr. Mooney had died from natural causes. He had been suffering for two years with heart attacks, at which time he would fall if he had no support near. Adam Lamp was probably the person who saw Mr. Mooney last alive. He saw him about his place on Saturday morning. The condition of the body showed that death had taken place some time Saturday. Mrs. Mooney, who was on a farm near Shawnee, Okla., was notified and her son, O.E. Leath, drove with her to this place arriving here Monday morning. A brother, Edmond Mooney of Eldorado Springs, Mo., was notified.

The coroner’s jury consisted of Henry Fischer, Will Rice, Mike Belt, Dave Gourge, Chas. Stringer and R.B. Powers. The witnesses were Adam Lamp, Walter Hewlett, George Prevo,(?)ake Rice, Homer Davis and Aubrey Prevo. The investigation was conducted by F.C. Callaway, the coroner.

Mr. Mooney had owned the farm for several years. Before that he had lived for two years on the Black farm. After farming in this vicinity for several years he went on a farm near Shawnee, Okla., and rented his property here. He returned last May to look after his berry crop and had been here since that time.

He was twice married. His first wife and three children were killed by lightning one day when Mr. Mooney was away from home. He returned to find his whole family dead and one side of his house wrecked by a bolt of lightning.

Eight years ago, at Augusta Kan., he was married to Mrs. Mary Leath, who survives him. – Monett Times
