Text | Washington Montgomery, known to his numerous friends over Barry county as “Uncle Wash”, passed from this life at his home southwest of Monett, Saturday morning, Sept. 13, at the age of 86 years. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. J.T. Brattin who for many years was his pastor, were held at the New Site Baptist Church Sunday afternoon, at 2o’clock. His body was laid to rest in the Walnut Grove cemetery southwest of the church. In its account of Mr. Montgomery’s death, the Monett Times of Saturday, September 13 said; “Mr. Montgomery was one of the picturesque character was rugged and trustworthy. He was a man of strong convictions and conscientious in what he considered his duty. He was the son of William and Mahala Segrist Montgomery and was born in Illinois November 23, 1843. He served his country during the Civil war. He was married to Mary E. Clendenen of Limestone county, Texas, October 26, 1865. They had one son, James Benton Montgomery who died September 22, 1866. his wife died December 29, 1918. Mr. Montgomery had been a member of the New Site church since 1859 and was a faithful and active member. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Roller of Purdy and Mrs. A T. Higgins of Monett. One brother, Newt Montgomery, died 30 of this year and another brother, Ivel Montgomery, died a year ago."
