Text | With the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Montgomery of Washburn Prairie Barry
county loses one of its old and most highly respected citizens. After
long years of suffering the invalid mother passed quietly away on Thursday
evening, Oct. 14, on the farm which had been her home for half a century.
Elizabeth Lowery Montgomery was born 1835 in Rockingham County, Tenn., and in 1850 was married to Hugh S. Montgomery who died on the same farm near Washburn in 1888. Mrs. Montgomery was the mother of seven children; Thomas H. of Oklahoma; T.L. of Washburn; Hugh S. of this city; Elizabeth deceased (wife of G.M. Brixey); Clementine, wife of Sol Sparkman of Washburn, Miss Clara of Washburn and Samuel S, deceased. Several years ago Mrs. Montgomery lost her eyesight. During her invalid years she has ever been the object of her children's tenderest care. Her comfort was their first care. T.L and Miss Clara lived with their mother and looked after her interests as if she were a child. Mrs. Montgomery had reared and educated orphan children in addition to her own family. She was a kindly and sympathetic mother and was dearly beloved by all her neighbors. She had been for years a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Funeral services were held Friday conducted by Rev E.W. McCracken. The remains were laid to rest in the Washburn Prairie Cemetery. |
