Well Known Author Was Ill For Year
Text Miss Nellie Alice Mills, retired school teacher and well known author, died at 8:20 this morning in St. Vincent's Hospital following a lingering illness. She was 83 years old.

Miss Mills had been ill for about a year and her condition became serious about a month ago. She was admitted to the hospital Saturday night.

Born January 2, 1874, in Oswego, Kan., she was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam C. Mills.

Miss Mills began teaching school when she was 16 years old and moved to Monett from Eureka Springs, Ark., when about 20. She taught in public schools here for about 45 years, beginning in the grades and later teaching commerce in the high school. She retired as a school teacher in 1939.

Among her writings were two popular books that became published, "Just As Of Old," a story of her life in college days, and "Historic Spots In Old Barry County," a story about Barry County residents. The last novel was published in 1952.

In addition to writing books, Miss Mills wrote several articles that were published in Sunday school papers.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Monett since 1900 and was worthy matron in 1901. She was presented with a 50-year membership pin in 1954. Miss Mills was also a member of the Past Matrons and Patrons Club of the O. E. S., the PEMBDA artists and writers guild, the Monett First Presbyterian Church, and the Eve Rebekah Lodge.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. George J. C. Wilhelm, with whom she made her home at 500 Central Avenue in Monett, one brother, W. A. Mills of Oklahoma City, Okla., and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete but will be held under the direction of the Mercer Funeral Home.

FUNERAL FOR NELLIE MILLS

Funeral services for Miss Nellie Alice Mills, 83, well known author and retired school teacher who died in St. Vincent's Hospital at 8:20 A. M. yesterday following a long illness will be held at 2:30 Thursday afternoon.

The final rites will be conducted in the Mercer Chapel with Rev. Lorin Laeger, pastor of the Monett First Presbyterian Church officiating, and burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, under direction of the Mercer Funeral Home.

Miss Mills was member of the P. E. O. Sisterhood and members of the organization will attend the services in a group.
