Text | Elisha Metcalf, son of Hiram and Mary Ann Metcalf, was born October 13, 1858, in Jackson County, Kentucky. When a young man he moved to Southwest Missouri. He was married to Sarah Williams in 1875. To this union 10 children were born, four of whom preceded him in death, Anna, Hiram, Jimmy, and Frances. He was also preceded in death by his wife. The surviving children are Elisha and John of Neosho, Elijah of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. James Long of Cassville, Mrs. Martha Ridenour of Baker, Ore., and Mrs. Susie Lee, Rocky Comfort. Mr. Metcalf was converted at the age of 21 years and united with the United Baptist Church in Kentucky. He was active as a minister of the gospel, preaching in various communities in Barry and McDonald Counties. He passed away at the home of a daughter, Mrs. James Long, in Cassville, March 27, at the age of 94 years, 5 months and 14 days. In addition to the above mentioned children the deceased is survived by one sister, Mrs. Frances Clark, Butterfield; 35 grandchildren, a number of great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted (preacher's name removed as he is still living) at the Exeter Baptist Church, Sunday, March 29, 1953. Interment was in the Elm Springs Cemetery in the Camp Crowder Military Reservation, near Neosho, Mo., under the direction of the Culver Funeral Home of Cassville. Note: He died at the home of Lucy (Metcalf) Long who was my grandmother. |
