Text | Elijah J. Metcalf, 89, died at this home in Thomas Hollow Thursday, January 24, from infirmative due to his age. Mr. Metcalf was born in Kentucky but came to Barry County when a young man and lived in that community where he passed away for more than 50 years. He was a good citizen and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He was a son of Hiram and Mary Ann Metcalf and was married to Mary Francis Sparks on Feb. 5, 1878. Eleven children were born to this union, four of the children preceded him in death. Mrs. Metcalf preceded him in death some years ago. Three sons, Dave Metcalf of Washington, Dan Metcalf of Idaho and Sherman Metcalf of Colorado, and four daughters, Mrs. Sarah Phillips of Washington, Mrs. William Hickman of Powell, Mrs. Ernest Bryson of Colorado and Mrs. Ed Rydner of Exeter, survive. Other survivors the three brothers, Elisha, of Exeter, and Rueben and John of Estol County, Ky., and two sisters, Mrs. Martha Land, Neosho; and Frances Clark, Butterfield; 25 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren together with a host of other relatives and friends. He was a staunch and devoted member of the Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon with burial in the nearby Metcalf Cemetery. The relatives have the sympathy of their many friends. The Rev. Chas. VanZandt was in charge. |
