Obit For Anna Elizabeth (Higgins) Mansfield
Headline -
Text Mrs. James Mansfield, one of the best loved women in Monett, died at her home, 410 Frisco avenue, about 11 o’clock Sunday night after a short sickness. Although she had been an invalid for forty years, her death came unexpectedly. She was feeling quite well on Sunday and spent a happy day with friends and relatives. About 6 o’clock she was seized with angina pectoris and suffered so intensely that she could not move from the couch on which she was lying. Between 10 and 11 o’clock she became easier and was undressed for bed. She died in the arms of her son, Charles Mansfield as he lifted her into her bed.

Although her health was frail and she was in pain much of the time, Mrs. Mansfield never lost her sweetness of character and disposition and she took an active interest in community affairs and in charitable work. She was one of the founders of the Sunshine club, a local charitable organization and its first president. She did a great deal of personal work, taking little neglected children into her home, cleaning them up and providing suitable clothing and then getting homes for them. Anyone in need found a willing helpful friend in her.

She was one of the founders of the Woman’s club, a literary society which was quite popular in Monett some years ago. She loved society and friends and took part in social affairs when she was able.

Anna Elizabeth Higgins was born September 5, 1867 at Hunnewell, Shelby county, Mo. She was married to James Mansfield at Pierce City January 5, 1884. They lived at Pierce City several years, and then went to Springfield and four years in Saint Louis. They came to Monett in 1897.

Mrs. Mansfield was the mother of two children, Charles E. Mansfield of Monett and Mary who died in infancy. She partly reared four children, nieces and nephews. Surviving relatives are her husband, one son, Charles E. Mansfield; two brothers , W.B. Higgins of San Diego, Calif., and John Higgins of Ottawa, Kan.; one granddaughter, Hildreth Mansfield, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at St. Lawrence Catholic church at 9 o’clock Wednesday morning. May 29, by the pastor Rev. B. B. McNamee.
