Text | George Long, 79 years, died at his home in Pierce City at 10 o’clock, Tuesday evening, Feb. 1. The Callaway undertakers of Monett had charge of the remains. Mr. Long was born in 1848 at Purdy and was the son of John and Lavina Long. He is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters. One daughter, Mrs. Joe McCormick, east of Monett, died several years ago. The surviving children are Quigley Long of Aurora, Buddie Long of Butterfield, Mrs. Asher Smith of Verona, Mrs. Nellie Gillen of Texas and Mrs. Dovie Shan of Louisiana. Burial was made in the Corsicana cemetery.— Monett Times Research Note: Haddock Family Web Page, State Historical Society of MO Microfilm September 22, 1910, Thursday, Cassville Republican, Barry Co., MO Family Reunion: On Sept 19, Mr. and Mrs. George Long held a family reunion at their home four and one half miles south east of Monett. A fine dinner was served at twelve o'clock, all of the children being present. Those present were Giles Long and wife; Mr. and Mrs. Quigley Long and three children; Mr. and Mrs. George Thomas; Mr. and Mrs. Joe McCromick and two children; also Mrs. Dove Shands from Petorlia, Texas, their daughter who is here for a month on a visit; also their single daughter, Miss Nellie Long. While dinner was being served the father passed envelopes around to all the daughters continuing one hundred dollars each and the envelopes to the two sons with fifty dollars each. Homer McIntosh the photographer came and they all had their pictures taken. George Long was called "Old Wig". George Long had two fingers missing. Opal McClure, George's granddaughter, said she remembered hearing that George was a water boy during the war. She indicated that he was carrying a bucket of water to a fellow soldier when someone shot the bucket out of his hand. His military records list him as 5 foot 2 1/2 inches tall. George Long and Sarah Francis Smith were married in Barry County, MO, by Rev. John Hudson, 11 Nov 1869. They are buried at Corsicana Cemetery, near Purdy, Barry County, Missouri. After George's death, on the papers for the Vet.'s Adm., Mrs. Dove Shands stated that George Long lived at her home at the time of his death in Pierce City, Missouri. Complexion fair, hair dark, eyes blue. Born in Missouri. Occupation farmer. Was enrolled Aug. 1, 1864 and mustered out July 10, 1865. Trained at Fayetteville, Arkansas. Cause of Death: George Long, influenza. Military record states that Mrs. Dove Shands, E. B. Wright, Victor O. Niemeyer and the community cemetery at Corsicana, Missouri, declare the amount due, $316.20. Stop payment notice. Pension Civil War. Effective date Jan. 20, 1941 active notice. Name of Veteran, George Long. Full name of payee, Sarah F. Long. Callaway Funeral Home Records stated that George Long was born in Purdy, MO, and that his funeral was 4 Feb 1927. The place of death was given as Pierce City, MO and that agrees with his military records. The funeral services were at the funeral home 2:30 p.m., death 1 Feb 1927, and the cause of death was stated as chronic valvular? heart. His age 78 years, 1 month, 21 days. He was married, and buried Corsicana Cemetery, Barry Co. He was born 10 Dec 1848, and his father was given as John Long and and his mother was given as Lavinia Beller. |
