Text | John D. Long, one of the old respected citizens of Cassville and one of Barry county’s native sons died suddenly at his home Monday. John D. Long was born in Barry county near Jenkins on March 3, 1854, and was 76 years, 5 months and 22 days. At the age of 20 years he was united in marriage to Miss Martha Dennis and to them were born 14 children, 13 of whom survive. They are Mrs. Samantha Bunton, Webb City; Mrs. Alice Means, Pierce City, Mrs. Cora Armstrong, Cassville; Mrs. Kizzie Corley, Rocky Comfort; Mrs. Mattie Schutt, Joplin; Curtis Long, Rocky Comfort; Mrs. Lettle Scoggins, Cassville; Harvey Long, Cassville, Mrs. Grettie Garoot, Madry; Mrs. Mannie Fare Jenkins; Mrs. Maudie Johnson, Sedan, Kan.; Wes Long, Bucklin Kan., and John Long, Kansas City, Kan. He professed faith in Christ many years ago and united with the Christian church. His wife died in 1917 and about nine years ago he moved to Cassville which has since been his home, he and his son, Harvey living together. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the Christian church in Cassville at 1 p.m., conducted by Rev. R. M. Patrick after which the body was taken to the King (Kane) cemetery near Jenkins by the Horine Funeral Service where burial was made. Research Note: Death Cert: # 25815 Name: John D. He was a brother to George Long who married Sarah Frances Smith, my great-great grandparents. |
