Text | Stephan Kungl, age 74, of Washburn, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at his home in Washburn. Mr. Kungl was born and raised during the rise of the German military forces prior to World War II. His father moved his family around trying to survive the war looking for a better place to live. Stephan opened up one time to tell the story of himself, his mother and an aunt who were captured and put on a train enroute to one of the German concentration camps. The train was stopped and all occupants were allowed to get out and run. They were given a ten minute head start. Stephan and those family members with him were able to make it to Austria, where they were able to secure immigration to Australia using Holland as their country of birth. Six years after arriving in Australia, he met "his wife" and they were soon married on February 7, 1957 in Wollengong, Australia. Within the first year their daughter was born. A second daughter was born just prior to Stephan making the decision to move his family to America. Like his father, he sought a better life for his family. After immigrating to the United States in 1964, their third and final daughter was born. For the next twenty years, they worked at many jobs to raise a family in California. Once again, looking for a better life Stephan and his wife set their sights on Missouri. They had always wanted to farm, and decided that this part of the country was the place to put down roots and stay. In 1985 they moved here to pursue the dream of farming. Thus began the final chapter in Stephan's life. He worked on the farm many years when he began to suffer health issues. Slowing down the past couple of years due to health concerns, he enjoyed what he could of life until the end. Stephan was able to enjoy Christmas with his family this year and he was able to see a slide show of the past 40 years of his life put together from slides that he had not seen in many years. Even to the end he was a humble man, who looked at the pictures and smiled but would offer no comment. He will be greatly missed and thought of often. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, three daugthers, seven grandsons, and one brother of Australia. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the White Funeral Home in Cassville, Missouri with burial at the Washburn Prairie Cemetery in Washburn, Missouri. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. till service time at the funeral home on Saturday. |
