Text | Funeral services for Claude James, 76, were held January 25, 1978 at the First Baptist Church of Shell Knob with Bro. Max Edmondson and Bro. Jess Higgs officiating. Burial was in the Painter Cemetery, under direction of Axley's Lakeside Mortuary of Shell Knob. Mr. James was a lifetime resident of Shell Knob. He was born the son of Nancy M. Epperly and Francis A. James, Jr. on January 28, 1901 in Shell Knob. The James family was one of the first families to settle in Shell Knob. Claude James was a fourth generation of a family originating from Virginia. The family moved from Virginia to Arkansas for a short time and then settled in the Shell Knob area. On April 3, 1929, Claude James and Zelma Blythe were united in marriage in Cassville, Missouri. To this union were born three daughters. Claude was a well known person in the Shell Knob area. He could ably bridge the olden days of the river and bottom country to the present lake area. Individuals returning to the area would always seek him out to find old landmarks of their past. He could recall for them stories and reminisce with them about their family histories. He was a jovial, fun living person. He had the ability to cheer you up no matter how down you were, just to be near him. He was a farmer all his life and especially enjoyed raising Hereford cattle on the farm on the lake where his ancestors originally lived. Left to mourn his passing are his three daughters, four grandchildren; one brother; and two sisters. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gilbert in 1929 and his wife Zelma, September 22, 1977. |
