Text | Mrs. Eliza J. Hurst of Washburn passed away at 12 m., Sunday, Oct. 10,
1909, at the ripe old age of 91 years, 6 months and 27 days.
She was born in Todd county Kentucky in 1818, and was united in marriage to Benjamin Franklin Hurst at the age of 23 years, in the same state. Mr. Hurst departed this life in 1874. She with her husband came to Missouri about 42 years ago and has since then been a citizen of Barry County, except 16 years spent in Oklahoma. To this union were born seven children, six boys and one girl. One boy died during infancy. Six children remain to mourn her death. They are John Hurst of Clarksville, Tenn., D.W. Hurst of Texas, Mark Hurst of Idaho, Win S. Hurst of Pawnee, Okla., James Hurst and Mrs. Jennie Hamilton of Washburn. Only two of her sons, James and Win, reached the home of their sister, where their mother died, in time for the funeral. Grandma, as she was called professed faith in Christ at the age of 18 years and united with the Baptist church in Kentucky. She remained steadfast in faith to the last and was a member of the Washburn Prarie Church at the time of her death. She expressed her willingness to go and her desire to depart and be at home with the redeemed of God. The writer joins the many friends in sympathizing with the bereft ones and Mrs. Hamilton who faithfully cared for her mother in her last sickness. May you remember, children, that your loss is her eternal gain. Funeral services were conducted at the home of Mrs. Hamilton by the writer. J. K. Harris. Resource Note: Mrs. Eliza J. Hurst 1818 - 1909 - Vol. II, pg. 66. of Barry County Cemeteries shows burial place as Washburn Prarie Cemetery and her month of birth as November not October. |
