Text | Hazel Margaret (Erwin) Higgs, 92 years, died at 7:48 p.m.
Friday, March 10, 2006, in Christian Health Care in Springfield, Missouri,
after a short illness. Hazel, daughter of Ora (Walker) Erwin and Judge Erwin, was born October 11, 1913, in Wayne, Missouri, one of eight children. Hazel was the last surviving child of Ora and Judge. While attending a pie supper at a local school, Hazel met her future husband, Hugh Monroe Higgs. They were joined in holy matrimony on June 4, 1932. To this union, four children were born: Fred Harvey Higgs, Hugh Darrell "H. D." Higgs, Franklin Delano Higgs and Martha Jane Higgs. Preceding Hazel in death was her beloved husband, Hugh, who died December 13, 2001, as well as two of their sons, Fred Harvey, born in 1934 and died at five days of age and Hugh Darrell "H. D." Higgs, who died October 5, 2003. Survivors are a son and daughter, ten grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandson also survive. One granddaughter preceded both Hugh and Hazel, Mrs. Sherry Jane Burd. Hazel was saved October 9, 1932, at New Hope Baptist Church, with her husband Hugh accepting Christ as his Lord just two days later on October 11, 1932 - Hazel’s birthday. She said later that she could not have asked for a better present. While much can be said about Hugh’s faithful call to preach the gospel, Hazel was a faithful partner in service with Hugh, bearing witness and recording Hugh’s many weddings, funerals and baptisms. Hazel was a preacher’s wife and lived her life doing her best to support Hugh in his call to preach. Raising three children, serving in many areas of whatever church Hugh was pasturing and being a helpmate to Hugh as he worked tirelessly for Jesus, Hazel sacrificed alongside Hugh in service to the Lord. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2006, in Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. Brother Charles Chrisman and Brother Steve Higgs will conduct the services. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Exeter, Missouri. |
