Text | Mr. Hickox, an aged and highly respected citizen, died at his home
Monday night, June 8, of heart failure. He had been in failing health for a
few months but was feeling as well as usual until a few hours before his
death. The funeral services were held at the Union Church at 2 o'clock
Saturday and the body was laid to rest in the Washburn Prairie Cemetery. Mr. Hickox was a consistent Christian and was a regular attendant of church as long as this health permitted. The main beautiful floral offerings showed the highest esteem in which he was held. He leaves three sons, Will, of California and Robert, of this place and a son in Duluth, Minn., who was absent and two daughters, Misses Lena and Martha who are at home. We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family in this their deep hour of sorrow. Research Note: In Barry Co., MO, in Washburn Twp., 1900, listed was Richard Hickox, age 91, widower, born August 1808, in VA, with VA born parents. He was living with his son Oscar, widower, who was born June 1837, age 62, in IL. His children were given as Lena, age 26, born in MN, Nov 1873; Martha, July 1881, age 18, born in S. D.; and Robert, Sept 1885, age 14, born in S. D. In 1880 R. D. Hickox, age 68, was listed in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha, Dakota Territory, with a son Oscar, who was born in IL, age 42. R. D. gave his place of birth as NY, with father who was born in CT, and mother born in R.I. Also in the household was Willis, born in IL, age 19. It appears from this record R. D. Hickox was born about 1812. There were no Richard Hickox names listed who were born in VA; so on the 1900 his birth place was probably recorded in error. Richard's cemetery stone at Washburn Prairie reads R. D. Hickox, Aug. 1, 1808 - July 4, 1901. Since this notice of his death was published in 1914, there has to be a mistake in the death date that was recorded on the stone, because his birth date is the same as given in 1900 on the census and so it appears to be correct. His death date according to the paper was June 8, 1914. Also at Washburn Prairie there are stones for Oscar, Co F. 95 Ill. Inf. Lena (DeGrogg) 1873-1929 and Jess Richard, 1868-1947. August 3, 1899, Thursday, Cassville Republican Washburn News: Mr. R. D. Hickox, father of Oscar Hickox, was ninety-one years of age, Tuesday, Aug. 1, that being his birthday. The old man can do a fair day's work yet, for one of his age. February 12, 1914, Thursday, Cassville Republican Washburn News: Robert Hickox and Miss Florence Stephens were quietly married at Miami, Okla., last week. Mr. Hickox is a worthy young man. He has been employed by the R. R. Co., the past few years. Miss Stephens is a daughter of Eli Stephens and has been employed as saleslady at W. L. Black's store for two years or more. Their marriage was a great surprise to their many friends. We extend congregations and wish them a long and happy life. |
