Martha Nellie Hewlett who for about 30 years was a resident of Barry County,
died at her home in San Bernadine, Cal., Jan. 23, 1915. Impressive funeral
services were held Monday, Jan. 25, at the parlors of Mark B. Shaw Company in
the presence of a large number of neighbors and friends. The flora tributes
were profuse and beautiful.
After a few well selected remarks upon the personal nature of the deceased by Chaplain Shaw, the Ladies Relief Coarse took charge of the services. A simple devotional service was conduced by Mrs. Ala M. Lee, of the Christian Science Church. The beautiful but appropriate hymns, "Sheppard Show us How to Go" and the "The City Four Square" were rendered. Her body was laid to rest at the beautiful Mountain View Cemetery following further services at the grave. Mrs. Hewlett was born in Tennessee March 31, 1834. Early in life she came to Missouri. In 1853, she married to John Lowder. To them was born a son, James Lowder, who resides near Purdy. Following her husband's death she was again married to S. M. Hewlett. To this marriage were born six children but only one daughter, Mrs. Nannie Porter of San Bernadine and a son, C. E. Hewlett of East St. Louis, Ill. survive. Her last husband died in 1886. Since 1898 she has lived with her daughter in California. The deceased lived a devoted Christian life and was loved by all who formed her acquaintance. |
