Text | Rowena L. (Kelly) Harwood of Joplin died April
12 following a long illness. Mrs. Harwood was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Kelly of Purdy. She attended the University of Missouri and the University of Southern California, and graduated from teacher's college in Springfield and California State University. She taught school at Butterfield and Monett, and at the college level in Marshall. She was a writer and was involved in the Joplin Little Theater. She helped write, produce, and direct Miss Calico, a musical which helped save the theatre from closing. She and Mary Helen Willhoite of Monett helped establish one of the first comprehensive school reading programs in the country. She also taught school in California and worked with the Jasper County Department of Family Services. She was a member of the University Women and Drama Club in Joplin. She married Hal Harwood of Big Springs, Texas, and he preceded her in death. Survivors include one son, and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Audrey Hall of Monett and Thelma Williams of Joplin. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 16, at the First Christian Church in Joplin with Rev. John Johnson officiating. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Purdy Cemetery under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary of Joplin. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. tomorrow, April 15, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. John's Cardiopulmonary Services. |
