Headline | AN OLD TIME CITIZEN DIES NEAR BUTTERFIELD |
Text | Time compels us to record the passing of another old time citizen, that had lived a long life in our midst and against whom, no one could speak ought. His life was a quiet peaceable one, a kindly neighbor and a splendid citizen, who enjoyed the confidence of all his acquaintances. For 57 years he had been a follower of the meek and lowly Nazarene and was an earnest and zealous Christian man. Sidney Hadley was born in Kentucky, Sept. 26th, 1849, and came to Barry County in 1854, and was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hadley, who located on the old farm 4 miles northeast of Cassville, where they lived and died. He was converted when 17 years of age, at the New Hope Church and was baptized by the late Rev. Daniel Morris, a noted and well-known minister in many years gone by. August 29, 1871, he and Miss Sarah E. Ferguson were married and to this union were born three sons and five daughter, who are: Henry, Albert and Orin of Barry County, Mrs. Pauline Hankins of Cassville, Mrs. Dora Gentry of Butterfield, Mrs. Tisha Birkes of Tulsa, Okla., and two daughters who died in infancy. In addition to his own children, he took Arlon Hankins who was left a motherless boy at four years of age and kept him until he was 17 years of age and who now lives in Kansas City. His children were at his bedside when the end came. He departed this life at his home north of Butterfield, April 21st, 1923, at 7 a.m., aged 73 years, 4 months and 25 days, of kidney trouble leaving a wife, 3 sons and 3 daughters, 7 grand-children, many relatives and friends to mourn his departure. Rev. J.T. Brattin conducted funeral services at the Butterfield Baptist Church, Sunday, April 25th, 1923, at 12:30 p.m. where a very large number of sorrowing relatives, friends and neighbors had congregated to show their love and respect for the departed. Relatives and friends sent many beautiful floral emblems. Interment was made in the Hadley Cemetery on the old homestead, where he had been reared. |
